Meet Sandy!

How do we know when the time is right to let a new pet into our lives?

I lost my beautiful, loyal, greedy chunk of a Labrador 2 years ago. Yes, I still had my little Mollie (staff/whippet) and Peg (Jug) but they weren’t Labradors and I missed the grounded Labrador energy terribly.

Since that time I have often thought of finding another. I have scoured the rescue centres, joined endless facebook groups, put in applications, and even considered a pup from a good friend who I’m sure would have been wonderful. Each time something wasn’t “right enough” to make it happen. Either the rescue centres thought I wasn’t suitable, or from my end I had doubts that there was too much going on in my life or I wasn’t fit enough to meet its physical needs.

Then just 4 weeks ago I saw some pups advertised. I made the phone call on a whim and went to see them. I pragmatically left to consider the situation but in my heart I knew that the little bitch who came ahead of the others to greet me and lick my face would become my knew friend and me hers.

So what is it that happens at a certain point in space and time? Is it just that the time feels right for us, or rather is it more that the animal chooses, or even a kind of metaphysical node is reached when the paths can cross – you could call it fate.

Most animals have come into my life in response to a need from them rather than me, or because of a chance meeting. I like it that way….. it gives the opportunity to rise to the challenge of their personality rather than be attracted by looks or type.

I reacted to Sandy because I missed Lily and the Labrador size and energy so much. However….. I am sure we will come across challenges of personality just as much as if she were a random rescue dog of a different size and shape and expected nature. I will get to know her and she will get to know me. We will love and we will battle and we will honour the chance by which we entered into each other’s lives.

God bless us Sandy!
